Introduction to Coastal Rowing (1 RI-26) (01 May 2026)

This course, open to anyone, Club Locarno member or not, with or without rowing experience, will introduce you to the joys , challenges, and rewards of Coastal Rowing. Four, two-hour sessions of instruction will get you to the point where you can safely launch, land, and row on your own. If you are not a Club Locarno Member, but at the end of the course would like to join, part of the course cost will be deducted from your membership fee.

Course Goals

To learn to row in Coastal waters, efficiently, safely, in a variety of conditions (though under 8 knots of wind), and confidently perform a self-rescue. You'll learn the basics of the stroke, body mechanics, form, steering, balancing, safety, and more.

You will also learn how to unrack, prep, rig, launch, land, clean, de-rig and stow the boat.

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Assessment

Pass: We want to know that you can be safe on the water, so you will need to demonstrate a basic ability to control your boat on the water, be able to self-rescue, and perform the land-based tasks relating to cleaning, rigging, etc.

Your instructor will choose the session for the self-rescue.

You may wish to being a wetsuit for this. If you don't have a wetsuit, wear layers that can get wet but will keep you relatively warm. Also bring a towel and a change of clothes, unless you don't mind being wet until you get home.

If you pass and decide to join Club Locarno, this course will serve as your Rowing Checkout for our Echo Classic boats, so you will be free to use them immediately.

What to Bring

We have a thorough discussion of rowing "fashion" on our website. But briefly:

Footwear: Bare feet are okay, but we recommend some form of water shoes. It's not always possible to avoid, let alone see, small sharp objects on the Jericho Sailing Centre grounds and beaches.

Clothing: Keep in mind that pants or shorts will likely get wet as we always do "wet" launches and landings .. no grounding the boats like a Viking Raid.

Water: Have a bottle that you can bring on the water with you. There is a filtered water dispenser for filling bottles in the Jericho Sailing Centre.

Food: Please bring some on-water snacks. This is a physical course, so it's important to stay fueled and hydrated.

Enthusiasm and a Willingness to Learn: Mandatory!

Recommended

Sunglasses: Highly recommend having a strap, and either floating sunglasses or a floating strap. Polarized is better. Avoid bringing expensive designer glasses.

Glasses Strap: If you wear prescription glasses, a floating strap is a very sensible investment.

Sunscreen: Mineral-based (zinc or titanium oxide) sunscreens are more effective and less damaging to sea life.

Dry Warm Clothes: As you will likely get wet, having some dry warm clothes (and possibly a towel) will make getting home after a session much more pleasant.

Phone and Case: If you wish to bring your phone on the water, keep it in a waterproof case.

Hat: A wide brim, floating hat with a chin strap is ideal.
Please note that while we try to finish on time, it's not guaranteed, so please don't book anything immediately following the course.

Advanced Coastal Rowing (2 RA-26) (03 May 2026)

For Club Locarno Members who wish to improve their technique.

Two sessions of two hours each, during which you will learn more about:

Drills, skills - and thrills! - of the catch, drive, finish, and recovery, as well as the balance, coordination, and timing required to improve your confidence on the water. Few things are better than rowing in a perfectly-balanced boat, spot-on catches, getting all your power out onto the blades, the boat moving under you, and your mind in rhythmic sync with your body. Your Inner Buddha will thank you.

Adapting to rough water. After all, when the going gets rough ... well, the going is going to be rough. Expect to be challenged. 'Nuff said!

Training and fitness techniques, tips, and tricks.

Feel free to discuss what you'd like to learn or improve with the Instructor.

Social Row (04 May 2026)

Meet at 6:15pm for a 6:30pm (-ish) launch.

Make this weekly, member-run, Social Row your chance to meet, row, exchange tips/tricks/war-stories, compare blisters, and otherwise schmooze, with your peers.

Social rows will vary according to the weather and the group, from a leisurely lily-paddle to something a bit more strenuous. The intent, however, is for the group to stay together.

All fleet members are welcome, though you do need to have been Checked-Out on the boat you wish to use.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to try the LiteRace 2x! Bow must have been Checked Out on this boat, while Stern needs only a CheckOut on any other boats

Please register for the event; and cancel if you can't make it so others can know if they should expect the pleasure of your company. It is also a good idea to check if others are registered before turning up unless you're happy to row alone.

Weather permitting: we'll likely cancel if it's raining too hard or winds are >8kt. We'll also adjust the number of registrants to ensure there are enough boats for everyone, particularly if this coincides with a lesson.

Please watch the #rowing channel on Club Locarno Slack for last minute changes.

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (3 RI-26) (05 May 2026)

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Hat: A wide brim, floating hat with a chin strap is ideal.
Please note that while we try to finish on time, it's not guaranteed, so please don't book anything immediately following the course.

Rowing Checkout - Echo (08 May 2026)

This Checkout is for new members with previous rowing experience who want to use the fleet, and is a prerequisite to using the Echo boats.

This Checkout is also recommended for existing fleet members who haven't been on the water in a while and wish to refresh their general knowledge of handling these boats. In this case, you will not be required to perform the self-rescue.

You will be getting on the water and rowing briefly, so please dress appropriately.

The Checkout covers:

Overview of the Echo fleet

Policies and practices

Signing out and use of logbooks

Rigging and de-rigging

Launching and landing

Distance rowing: where to go, tides, wind/waves, currents, hazards (very brief)

Self-rescue: i.e. getting back into the boat from deep water

The self-rescue is done at the end of the Checkout. It typically involves spending about two-three minutes in the water, so we recommend you bring either a wetsuit or something to warm you up after you land, as you'll need to de-rig the boat and return it to the rack.

New members must demonstrate a successful self-rescue to pass the Checkout. Therefore, depending on the outcome of the Checkout, you may be asked to take an Introductory Lesson.

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (2 RI-26) (08 May 2026)

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (4 RI-26) (10 May 2026)

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Social Row (11 May 2026)

What to Bring

We have a thorough discussion of rowing "fashion" on our website. But briefly:

Please note that while we try to finish on time, it's not guaranteed, so please don't book anything immediately following the course.

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Please note that while we try to finish on time, it's not guaranteed, so please don't book anything immediately following the course.

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Social Row (18 May 2026)

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (6 RI-26) (20 May 2026)

Rowing Checkout - Echo (22 May 2026)

Social Row (25 May 2026)

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (6 RI-26) (25 May 2026)

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Introduction to Coastal Rowing (7 RI-26) (28 May 2026)

Take this course if ...

you are not a member of Club Locarno and want to learn to row;

you are a Club Locarno Member and want to learn to row;

regardless of membership, you have rowed before but want to refresh bygone skills, resurrect long-forgotten calluses, or learn why Coastal Rowing is such fun ; or,

you have been asked to do so as a result of a Rowing Checkout.

Recommended

Social Row (01 Jun 2026)
