Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W1) (16 May 2026)

If you a rare person who is new to our Sailing Fleet and already has experience sailing Waszp-like crafts, you can get checked out to use the club boats by registering for this event and choosing the "checkout only" ticket option.

For everyone else, this advanced lesson series is for Club Locarno members who are part of the Sailing Fleet. The Waszp is a foiling skiff, which is a fun challenge for experienced sailors. This lesson series will teach the basic skills necessary to get checked out into the Waszp buddy system (the ability to take the boat out for a solo sail requires a separate checkout after you have had some time on the water to further develop your skills).

Required sailing skill pre-requisites:

Comfortable rigging and sailing a Laser (buddy sailing can be done with a Laser rather than requiring a motorized RIB)

Experience using sail controls to quickly change your sail shape in light, medium, and heavy breeze

Good/Fast double handed sheeting

Confidence in skippering a boat in 15+ knots of wind and in gusty conditions

Comfortable/physically capable with repeatedly righting a capsized vessel for at least 20 minutes.

Well versed in Collision Regulations and/or Racing Rules of Sailing (you've ideally participated in several local races).

Willingness to adhere to the approximately 30 minutes of pre/post flight checks required every time before/after sailing the WASZP.

Ability to approach the challenge of foiling with a growth mindset.

A demonstrated ability to make good judgement calls before launching and while sailing to prioritize safety of the sailor and vessel.

This lesson series includes:

Day 1: 6.5-hour lesson with a Mac Sailing Instructor

Introduction to the theory behind foiling

Introduction to the parts of the Waszp

How to rig, launch, and land the Waszp

Sailing the Waszp with one wing touching the water

Sailing the Waszp in displacement mode with both wings dry

Accelerating the boat to achieve first straight line flights

Displacement tacking and gybing

Discuss how a motorized RIB needs to approach a Waszp in order to wing up (in the event of a rescue, the member will have to instruct the driver how to do this).

Day 2: a 6-hour session with a Club Locarno Waszp captain or volunteer

the mandatory clubroom and sailing orientation checkout

learning the Locarno Buddy System procedures

a buddy sail (with a Laser and also a RIB depending on number of registrants)

Practicing all the skills from the lesson

All participants will get a chance to practice launching and landing the Waszp in a buddy system setting.

How to switch sailors between a Laser and Waszp during a buddy sail

To maximize your time on the water during the lesson, please watch this rigging video before attending the lesson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF90Yz48eJ4

Documents outlining Waszp procedures can be found on the Club Locarno website following this pathway: Sail > Sailing Documents and Links

https://www.clublocarno.com/Sailing-Documents-and-Links

Registration:

Registration closes 48 hours before the lesson.

A lesson will run even if only 1 person registers. If the lesson is not full within 48 hours of the lesson, any Waszp fleet member who has taken a lesson in the past is welcome to join the lesson for free.

There are no refunds for missed lessons.

Members can make up a lesson ONLY IF the instructor agrees, there is another set of lessons of the same type already scheduled, and there is space in the lesson. All of this is to be discussed between the Mac Sailing instructor and the participant.

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons (Group VR1) (17 May 2026)

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons

Intro to Racing is a great way to learn the basics of racing, and is the course to take if you want to join the Jericho Tuesday evening/Sunday afternoon races, but aren’t comfortable joining by yourself.

We will cover the basics of racing:

how to start on a start line, how to round marks on a race course

different flags and countdown signals

navigating close and around other boats while following the rules

race strategy while you are sailing around the committee boat waiting for your race to start

Skills: how to adjust your sail shape with your sail controls in order to get more speed out of your sails depending on your angle to the wind and the wind conditions

Bonus - The following will depend on the wind, and the group of participants (and how overwhelmed with new information you already feel!), such as:

Bonus tactics: Sailing around the committee boat and start pin to get a point on the horizon to line up with the pin so during the start you know if you've crossed the line or not / Looking at the course to see which side has more wind than the other / Watching other boats already on the course to see what angles they are hitting / Looking at the tankers to see which way the current is going / Timing your approach to the start line

Bonus skills: balancing skills like roll tacks and rudderless sailing depending on wind conditions.

You will have ONE coached training session and then for TWO sessions you will be joining the Jericho Race on the Sunday noon and Tuesday evening, with your coach. This is a great way to participate in your first Jericho race with a coach present to assist you.

Prerequisites:

REQUIRED

Being a member at Club Locarno Sailing Fleet.

Having completed an equivalent of CANSail 2, Beginner or Refresher Lessons.

Having attended (or watched online) the Jericho Rookie Racing Seminar. There will be a quiz!

Recommended to maximize benefits of this training: 30 additional hours on water after CanSail 2 or Beginner Lessons, 10 additional hours on water after Refresher lessons.

Sessions:

Friday evening: 1800 - 2100 (3 hours).

Sunday noon: 1100 - 1500 (4 hours).

Tuesday evening: 1730 - 2030 (3 hours).

Location:

Registration.

Registration closes 48 hours before the first class.

Cancellations must be done at least 5 days before the first lesson, by email sailinglessons@clublocarno.com

Weather permitting - we'll cancel the sailing if winds are higher than 20 knots, but we’ll practice the rigging and unrigging of the boat. Sailors will sail the boats they are currently checked out.

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons (Group VR1) (19 May 2026)

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons

Intro to Racing is a great way to learn the basics of racing, and is the course to take if you want to join the Jericho Tuesday evening/Sunday afternoon races, but aren’t comfortable joining by yourself.

how to start on a start line, how to round marks on a race course

different flags and countdown signals

race strategy while you are sailing around the committee boat waiting for your race to start

Sessions:

Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W1) (23 May 2026)

Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W2) (30 May 2026)

Nacra 500 (Level 1 Recreational Catamaran) - Rigging clinic and DRY CHECKOUT - RC2 (30 May 2026)

About the boat

The Nacra 500 Fun is perfect for recreational sailing but can also be used for local club racing. At the Nacra family we also call this boat the ‘pocket rocket’. It’s a simple but really quick catamaran and easy to maneuver in different kind of waves with the large buoyant hulls. Launching from the beach is easy with the kick-up rudders and the skeg hulls. All working gear is from Harken, just like the other Nacra leisure boats.

Next to all the features of the Nacra 500 Fun, the Sport edition has a larger battened MNX jib which reaches down to the spinnaker pole. Giving the boat more power lower down, more drive and less heel. The Nacra 500 Sport also comes without dagger boards and a simpler hull construction which saves weight and gains more speed. The 17 square nylon spinnaker packs in a cloth chute with glass fibre entry, making it easy to launch and recover. All in all, the Naca 500 Sport is in perfect balance and enables you to drive fast upwind and downwind.

Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W2) (06 Jun 2026)

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons (Group VR2) (12 Jun 2026)

Location:

Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W3) (13 Jun 2026)

Intro to Racing - Sailing Lessons (Group VR2) (14 Jun 2026)

Waszp Checkout & Lesson (Group W3) (20 Jun 2026)
