This club trip is open to all levels, but you need to be a competent swimmer and be comfortable in the water, breaking waves, and so on. We are all beginners, and we won't have an instructor, but those who have done it before will be happy to share their (limited) knowledge. It's not hard and most people with good balance on a board should expect to catch waves on their first day.
We are planning to leave on Friday April 27th in the morning, and return Sunday April 29th. Details may change, but we'll keep in touch about this. If you can't get the Friday off, you can always leave later and meet us there.
We will most likely camp at Surf Junction. They have fire pits and a hot tub.
We will take a maximum of 4 boards (the BIC boards - right rack) from the club. Additional boards can be rented in Tofino (e.g. I have rented in the past from the Long Beach surf shop). The plan is for all members going on the trip to share all the boards and costs for renting any additional boards.
Going to Tofino: You will need to coordinate with others to get a ride, possibly share some of the camping gear, etc. Get in touch with me as soon as you register: vice-commodore@clublocarno.com and/or add me on Facebook (Vasco Castela) and let me know you want to go on the trip.
Carrying the boards: watch this video on how to securely strap down the SUP. Ideally we will all do this together.
Wetsuits: A 3/2 wetsuit is probably not enough for most people at this time of the year. It depends on what kind of weather we'll get, of course. A 4/3 or 5/4 is recommended, along with booties and gloves. All are available for rent in Tofino if you don't have your own.
You may want to watch this useful video on how to paddle out in surf.
I hope you can join us on this awesome trip!
