Hi all,

We are happy to announce that we found a spot for a Club Trip this year at China Creek on August 7-10! Some detailed information on the location are at the bottom of this email.

Our trips include several planning/prep sessions leading up to the trip and for wrapping-up afterwards. We do a lot of planning online so if you haven't already please join our Slack channel here. Some members will also take additional days and leave for the trip earlier and/or return later than the dates specified for the trip. Some members have their own gear and will use this instead of, or in combination with club gear. Whether you need to use club gear (or not), please register so there's a sense of how many members will be on the trip.

A nominal Club Trip Fee is required for all members who will be using club gear on the trip, but is waived for those who already have a High Wind Pass. A number of camp sites (3) have been reserved already. If you prefer to be away from the herd you must make your own reservations.

Key Dates:

  • Wed July 29 @ 6pm - Rigging & Transport Clinic (Rigging, Transport, and Trip Planning)
  • Wed August 5 @ 6pm - Pre-Trip Work Party (Mandatory, if you are using club gear)
  • Friday Aug 7 @ 8am - Leave on Friday
  • Wednesday Aug 12 @ 6pm - Post-Trip Work Party & BBQ/Social (depending on COVID restrictions)
Also please study the information here:

Registration types:

Please register for the trip based on the type of club's windsurfing boards you believe you need for the trip. Registration is limited based on the number and type of boards that are approved for use on the trip. There are also registration types for members who own their own gear, or who are not planning to windsurf.  Guests can accompany members on trips but cannot use club gear.

Location: China Creek

Levels

This is a great location for all levels, in particular experienced L1s and L2s. The wind is on shore and there is a nice sheltered section which makes it great for skills improvement.

The wind is thermal and tends to pick up later in the day, however, we experienced wind on both cloudy and sunny days so from our (limited) experience it is difficult to predict.

However, please note that, while possible, it is likely not a high wind destination. While we experienced 22-25 knots on one day, this was likely a pressure system coming through, and is not the norm.

Location

The China Creek Marina and Campsite is beautifully situated along the Alberni Inlet. It is a fully serviced campground with washrooms and hot showers. The campsites are forested with direct access to the inlet. You can start sailing directly across from your campsite!

If it is not windy, there are some nice hiking options. Also, Port Alberni is only 15 km away.

Dates

August 7-10. We are planning on taking a ferry in the morning of August 7 and return in the evening of August 10. Given the continued reduced ferry capacity it is wise to book a reservation early. It could be either from Tsawwassen to Duke Point or Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay.

How to get there

China Creek is located 1.5 hours from Nanaimo. The road to China Creek includes a 10 minute unpaved off road section, however, for those familiar with Nitinat, the road is in better shape than the Nitinat road. Also, there is cell phone reception along the entire way as well as at the campground.
