Bowen Island Kayak Trip from JSCA
15-17 July 2024

Trip Leaders & Organizers Sugeet Miglani  & Angela Smailes.

Explore the south end of Howe Sound. This will be a Level 2 trip as we’ll be covering some distance, there are several crossings, and wind, swell and tides can be issues in this area.
Below is the proposed trip, with a couple of options the day trip on the 2nd day and a back-up plan in case adverse weather. The final route will be decided based on the group composition and the weather.

Day 1 – Meet in the morning at JSCA to pack kayaks. Cross to Lighthouse
Point in West Van and cross to Apodaca campground on the eastern shore of
Bowen Island (15km with two significant crossings).
Day 2 – Day paddle to the Pasley Islands and back to Apodaca (30 km but
with empty boats). Potential option to instead paddle north to Pico Beach
and to have dinner on the way back at one of the restaurants on Bowen
Island depending on the group’s collective preference (18 km).
Day 3 – Break camp in the morning and paddle back to Jericho.
Unpack/clean/stow away gear and head home.
Backup plan – If the weather does not allow for a crossing of Burrard Inlet, we may load the boats on cars and drive to Eagle Harbour in West Van and start the trip there. This depends on having enough cars among group members to transport kayaks from JSCA. The paddling plans will need to be amended as well to account for the weather.
Please sign up by asap. We will have a group paddle (to assess participants
paddling ability) and trip meeting. Attending this paddle and meeting will be mandatory for joining the trip. In addition, group members are expected to help with planning and organizing the trip as needed.
Food – We will discuss the various options at the planning meeting.
Paddling ability – This will be a Level 2  trip – so paddlers will ideally
have Paddle Canada Level 2 certification or Level 1 with experience. Trip
leaders will be making participant decisions based on experience, and, if it
comes down to choosing, favouring people who have not been on a trip this
year yet.
