Registration

  • This is for new members with rowing experience - demonstrate your skills and get cleared to use the Echo fleet.

Registration is closed

This Checkout is for new members with sufficient previous rowing experience who want to use the fleet. New members are expected to follow the Rowing Craft Progression: thus, this Checkout is for the Echo boats.

This Checkout is also recommended for existing fleet members who haven't been on the water in a while and wish to refresh their general knowledge of handling these boats. In this case, you will not be required to perform the self-rescue.

You will be getting on the water and rowing briefly, so please dress appropriately. Launches are "wet", so please bring footwear that can (and will) get wet.

The Checkout covers:

  • Overview of the Echo fleet.
  • Policies and practices: PFDs, throw-bags, etc.
  • Signing out and in; use of logbooks.
  • Reporting damage.
  • Rigging and de-rigging.
  • Launching and landing; cleaning.
  • Distance rowing: where to go, tides, wind/waves, currents, hazards (very brief).
  • Self-rescue: i.e. getting back into the boat from deep water.

The Instructor will determine if you pass the Checkout based on your:

  1. Proficiency and care in all things related to getting on and off the water. Our procedures are meant to minimize boat damage, maximize your safety, and include cleaning and stowing the craft and other gear.
  2. Proficiency in rowing. You must be able to row reasonably well to be safe on our coastal waters. Previous experience is required, but may not be sufficient.
  3. New members must demonstrate a successful self-rescue to pass the Checkout.
The self-rescue is done at the end of the on-water portion of the Checkout. It typically involves spending about two-three minutes in deep water, so we recommend you wear a wetsuit or equivalent clothing that can get wet, appropriate footwear (e.g., booties) to be relatively comfortable in cold water. Feel free to bring a towel and a change of clothing, as you will clean, de-rig, and stow the boat, as part of the Checkout.

If you do not pass the Checkout, you will need to take an Introductory Lesson.
