If you a rare person who is new to our Sailing Fleet and already has experience sailing Waszp-like crafts, you can get checked out to use the club boats by registering for this event and choosing the "checkout only" ticket option.

For everyone else, this advanced lesson series is for Club Locarno members who are part of the Sailing Fleet. The Waszp is a foiling skiff, which is a fun challenge for experienced sailors. This lesson series will teach the basic skills necessary to get checked out into the Waszp buddy system (the ability to take the boat out for a solo sail requires a separate checkout after you have had some time on the water to further develop your skills).

Required sailing skill pre-requisites:

  • Comfortable rigging and sailing a Laser (buddy sailing can be done with a Laser rather than requiring a motorized RIB)
  • Experience using sail controls to quickly change your sail shape in light, medium, and heavy breeze
  • Good/Fast double handed sheeting

  • Confidence in skippering a boat in 15+ knots of wind and in gusty conditions
  • Comfortable/physically capable with repeatedly righting a capsized vessel for at least 20 minutes.
  • Well versed in Collision Regulations and/or Racing Rules of Sailing (you've ideally participated in several local races).
  • Willingness to adhere to the approximately 30 minutes of pre/post flight checks required every time before/after sailing the WASZP.
  • Ability to approach the challenge of foiling with a growth mindset.
  • A demonstrated ability to make good judgement calls before launching and while sailing to prioritize safety of the sailor and vessel.
This lesson series includes:
  • Day 1: 6.5-hour lesson with a Mac Sailing Instructor
    • Introduction to the theory behind foiling
    • Introduction to the parts of the Waszp
    • How to rig, launch, and land the Waszp
    • Sailing the Waszp with one wing touching the water
    • Sailing the Waszp in displacement mode with both wings dry
    • Accelerating the boat to achieve first straight line flights
    • Displacement tacking and gybing
    • Discuss how a motorized RIB needs to approach a Waszp in order to wing up (in the event of a rescue, the member will have to instruct the driver how to do this).
  • Day 2: a 6-hour session with a Club Locarno Waszp captain or volunteer
    • the mandatory clubroom and sailing orientation checkout
    • learning the Locarno Buddy System procedures
    • a buddy sail (with a Laser and also a RIB depending on number of registrants)
    • Practicing all the skills from the lesson
    • All participants will get a chance to practice launching and landing the Waszp in a buddy system setting.
    • How to switch sailors between a Laser and Waszp during a buddy sail

To maximize your time on the water during the lesson, please watch this rigging video before attending the lesson. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kF90Yz48eJ4
