Kayak Lessons

Our Kayak lessons are aligned with the standards of the Paddle Canada Sea Kayak program.  All members must have the skills outlined in Paddle Canada "Basic Kayaking Skills", PLUS the ability to self-rescue, in order to use the fleet.  Look at our Kayaking Calendar for the schedule of lessons and clinics and to register.

Basic Kayaking Skills

This course is intended for someone who has little or no previous kayaking experience.  It consists of two parts;  to orient you to the Locarno fleet and to teach you the basics sea kayaking skills. This Paddle Canada Basic Kayaking skills course is delivered by certified instructors.  The certification lesson is on 2 day following days and 7 hours long each.  The cost you will fine here.

Requirements: Must wear PFD and wetsuit. We provide PFD's, you must bring a wetsuit.

Sea Kayak Level-1 Skills

Level-1 provides the skill and knowledge necessary for day-long sea kayaking trips in sheltered waters (non-wilderness areas). Successful completion of Level-1 indicates competence to paddle a sea kayak within a sheltered bay in the company of one or more paddlers with Level-1 or greater skill and knowledge.  This a a 14 hour class delivered over a weekend, and the cost you will find here.
Successful candidates earn a Paddle Canada Level 1 skills certification.  The full course outline is here

Prerequisite: Paddle Canada Basic Kayak skills certification or equivalent skill and knowledge.

Requirements: Must wear PFD and wetsuit. We provide PFD's, you must bring a wetsuit (either your own or you can rent).

    • a synthetic layer for under the wet suit,
    • rain jacket or wind shell that you don’t mind getting wet, 
    • shoes or booties that you can wear in the water, and
    • a complete change of warm clothes for afterwards.

    Lessons will start on the hour - please arrive a bit early.  We will start on land and have an opportunity to change into wetsuits before we launch.
