Checklist for Windsurfing Level 1 Checkout

In this checkout, we will confirm that you can perform the following:

1. Recap: Beginner Windsurfing Lessons

• Basic theory (points of sail)
• How to sail a windsurfer
• How to turn around and return (basic maneuvers)
• How to do a self-rescue
• Safety rules
• Basic carry, clean, and store windsurfing boards and sails

2. Demonstrate that you can ...

Fleet overview and facilities

• Open and lock the Windsurfing container
• Distinguish the Level 1, 2, and 3 boards based on their key distinguishing feature. Explain how they are organized in the container
• Distinguish the Level 1 and 2 sails and explain how they are organized on the rack
• Explain how to get out if you get locked inside
• Explain what the skill Level system is for and where to read about it https://www.clublocarno.com/page-1569379

Use the craft signout system and submit damage reports

• Sign/Sign-In out a board and sail
• Use the paper logbook if the computer is not working
• Explain damage report procedure (submit a report on the computer, mark with fluorescent tape, when in doubt)
• 2-Hour rule

Safely transport gear to the beach and launch

• Properly carry gear to and from the beach (sequence, and carrying method) and how to place the gear safely on the beach (oriented to the wind, and not on pebbles)
• Explain what to avoid when launching/landing (DO NOT drag gear. DO NOT sail the board/fin into the shore)

Landing, washing and storing the equipment

• Board - on the rack in the rinsing area
• Sail - in the ocean or while hung up inside the sail curtain (NOT on the JSCA sail rinsing racks if at all possible)

3. Policies, practices, culture for the Windsurfing fleet

(You should be familiar with this information or know where to look it up)

• Locarno Way: equipment, people, volunteerism
• People: Director, Fleet Captains, everybody else incl. potential mentors and buddies
• Communications: Slack Chat (informal) and Email Announcements (official)
• Website (Clinic Schedule, Trip Schedules, How the summer windsurfing season tends to work)
• Windsurfing Wednesdays
• Windsurfing Level 1 members are not allowed to take gear out above 15 knots
• Guests are NOT allowed on windsurfing equipment
• 2-Hour Rule
